每个世代都在等一张属於自己的无敌合辑，里头塞满了心爱乐团的独门曲目—《dark was the night》，就是一场独立世代的摇滚群星会，几乎囊括了过去十年最具代表性的艺人与团体，卡司只能用「梦幻」来形容。

为了提醒世人持续关注爱滋病的威胁，近三十组各领风骚的顶尖乐团，纷纷放下手边工作，走进录音室灌录一曲。由the national双胞胎兄弟档监制，一共收录了三十一首从未发表的曲子，收益全数捐给慈善组织red hot。唱作人系如bon iver丶iron & wine与conor oberst（bright eyes），名团系如my morning jacket丶beirut与grizzly bear，特色女声系如feist丶cat power与blonde redhead，全数到位；年初刚发片的andrew bird与antony也分别以拿手的小提琴和凄绝男音，翻唱了handsome family与bob dylan的作品。

此外，久未推出新作的加拿大巨团arcade fire与布鲁克林才子sufjan stevens，也让乐迷一饱耳福，後者一首十分钟力作〈blood〉，更在专辑内占据了最长的篇幅。不仅获得年轻血轮力挺，传奇人物如talking heads主脑david byrne丶灵魂乐女伶sharon jones与经典大团yo la tengo也都来共襄盛举。

最特别的是，broken social scene主唱kevin drew丶belle & sebastian主唱stuart murdoch与death cab for cutie主唱ben gibbard，都暂时脱队，以个人名义慷慨献声。tv on the radio吉他手dave sitek与sigur ros主脑jon birgisson化名而成的riceboy sleeps，更带来母团风味十足的精彩好歌。
